Rise and Fall of Arela
Wax Forest Chitin
The Chitin of the creatures of the Wax Forests and armor made from the material are exceptionally rare, mostly owing to the fact that no one has a great desire to entire the wax forests to go and get it, and that crafting with such materials is not a well-known skill. Still, some rare instances of ancient weapons and armor being found made of similar materials lend to rumors that weapons and armor made from such chitin may have some benefits over plain steel.
The chitin of these creatures varies in quality from specimen to specimen, but there are rumors of those armored bodies are a good deal harder than steel, even rivaling the integrity of often-sought Original Arelan Steel.
Wax Forest Chitin armors are one category lighter than normal for purposes of movement and other limitations. Heavy armors are treated as medium, and medium armors are treated as light, but light armors are still treated as light. This decrease does not apply to proficiency in wearing the armor. A character wearing chitin full plate must be proficient in wearing heavy armor to avoid adding the armor’s check penalty to all his attack rolls and skill checks that involve moving. Spell failure chances for armors and shields made from chitin are decreased by 15%, maximum Dexterity bonuses are increased by 1, and armor check penalties are decreased by 2 (to a minimum of 0).
In addition Chitin armors provide the wearer with DR based on the armor type (light, medium, heavy, 1, 2, 3 respectively). This DR may be overcome by piercing damage at least.
